Olathe United overcame sloppy play and a resilient Northland side to extend their win streak to 8 games on Friday night. The final score was 2-0. OU dominated much of the possession for most of the game but had a hard time breaking down the low block due to poor passes and sloppy play in the final third. They finally broke through in the 75th minute when centerback, Andrew Porter collected the ball in the defensive third and found plenty of space through the middle third to take it himself. Porter, a converted midfielder, had no problem making a couple Northland defenders miss and send a pass across the 6 yard box from the left hand side that attacking midfielder Max Leiker simply had to get his foot on in order to finish in a wide open goal. OU scored 5 minutes later when Leiker sent a hard, low cross towards the goal that caromed off a Northland defender's hip and into the goal.
After the game, we caught up with head coach, Todd Esh: "Not our best performance but we will take it. We had a goalie playing striker, we had a defender playing on one leg and we had no subs. The boys that were here gutted it out and did what they had to do to get the win so I am proud of them for that. We are doing some things better than we did early in the season but we also shoot ourselves in the foot by either not communicating or by not listening to the communication that is taking place. We have a nice 11 day break before our next game and we will actually get to practice for the first time as a team. We have played well as a team so far this year but I think we will really start to see some improvement moving forward. These boys have so much skill and ability so now we have to maximize that."
